Collect on Delivery (COD) is a service that allows the sender to collect from the recipient money for postage, fees, merchandise, or any combination thereof. Each COD item has an identification number, enabling delivery confirmation.
- COD is used by senders who want to collect payment for merchandise and/or postage and fees when the item is delivered to the receiver.
- Sender pays postage plus fees at time of mailing.
- The mailer guarantees to pay any return postage, unless otherwise specified on the mail.
- Amount collected may not exceed $1,000.
- Must be presented for mailing at a Post Office™ facility or given to a rural carrier. COD mail cannot be deposited:
- In a Post Office maildrop
- In a street letterbox
- In a rural mailbox
- Given to the carrier (for that delivery address) unless it is a rural carrier
Tracking of mailpieces using Collect on Delivery service is available using USPS Tracking® on USPS.com®. Recipients will automatically be signed up to receive email or SMS text tracking notifications from USPS if the commercial shipper provides an email address or text-capable phone number with their shipping manifest.
Collect on Delivery (COD) does NOT provide:
- Expedited delivery service
- Guaranteed delivery time
